Explora III Debuts as the Line's Roomiest Ship Yet

Explora Journeys has taken delivery of Explora III, the third ship in its luxury fleet and the first that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to the line’s official announcement, the ship was handed over at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa, Italy, and it is now the most spacious vessel Explora Journeys operates — extended by 19.2 metres compared with its two sister ships. The delivery puts the young brand at the exact halfway point of its build-out: three of a planned six ships are now in service, with Explora IV, V, and VI still under construction for arrival in 2027 and 2028.

What’s happening this week

The timing is what makes this newsy right now. Explora III did not go straight into revenue service. Per the announcement, the ship ran a five-night “Prelude Journey” from 24 to 29 July 2026, sailing Genoa to Rome (Civitavecchia) by way of Marseille, Saint-Tropez, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Livorno as a behind-the-scenes preview. From there the calendar moves fast:

That seven-night Barcelona-to-Lisbon maiden voyage launches an inaugural northern season that Explora Journeys says will run a continuous route with no repeated itineraries, threading Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, and North America. In 2027, the ship is slated to headline the line’s debut Alaska season.

Why the LNG detail matters

Explora III is the first LNG-capable ship in the fleet, and the line frames it as the next step in its environmental strategy. LNG capability, combined with the shore-power connection the announcement highlights (letting the ship draw electricity from the dock instead of running engines in port), is where much of the cruise industry is heading — especially at the luxury end, where guests increasingly ask what a premium fare is actually buying beyond the suite.

Our read: the fuel story is real, but it is also a forward bet. LNG still burns fossil fuel; its value grows only as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG become available at scale. For now, the more immediate guest-facing upgrades are the ones onboard.

What’s new onboard

The announcement leans on space and dining. Explora III introduces three new culinary concepts — The Cellar, The Chef’s Table, and Shore Club on 11 — plus a second Owner’s Residence designed by Patricia Urquiola, expanded Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences, reimagined wellness facilities, and Chopard’s first boutique at sea. Brand ambassador Jannik Sinner appeared during the first two days of the Prelude Journey.

If you cruise luxury, or you are luxury-curious and comparing the newer all-suite brands, Explora III is worth a bookmark for two reasons. First, an all-new ship with an itinerary that never repeats a port across a full season is a genuinely different way to see Northern Europe and the Arctic edge.
