Is Cruise Food Free?

Most of the food on a cruise is already paid for in your fare. The main dining room, the buffet, and a long list of casual venues are included, so you can eat all day without spending a cent extra. What costs more are the specialty restaurants, a handful of premium snacks, and some room-service orders.

What’s included in your fare

The included options alone are more than enough to eat well for the whole sailing. On a typical mainstream ship that covers:

• The main dining room, with a rotating multi-course menu each evening.
• The buffet, open for breakfast, lunch, and usually dinner.
• Casual spots like the poolside grill, pizza counter, deli, and often a sit-down breakfast or lunch cafe.
• Free beverages such as drip coffee, tea, iced tea, lemonade, and tap water.

You can mix and match all of these as often as you like at no charge.

What usually costs extra

The line draws revenue from the premium tier of dining. Expect to pay for:

• Specialty restaurants, like steakhouses, Italian, sushi, or chef’s-table experiences, charged as a cover fee or per item.
• Premium snacks and treats, such as branded coffee, milkshakes, gelato, or candy shops.
• Room service, which is free on some lines but increasingly carries a delivery fee or per-item pricing.
• Drinks, since sodas, alcohol, and specialty coffees aren’t part of the base fare.

How to keep it free

If you’d rather not spend extra, you can stick entirely to the included venues and still eat very well. The main dining room and buffet change their menus daily, so variety isn’t a problem. Treat the specialty restaurants as an optional splurge for a special night rather than a necessity.

The short version: nobody goes hungry on a cruise without paying more. The included food is plentiful, and the extra-cost venues are there for when you want to upgrade the experience.
