Can You Book a Cruise at 18?

You generally can’t book and sail a cruise on your own at 18. Most major cruise lines set 21 as the minimum age for the lead guest in a cabin when no older adult is traveling along. There are exceptions, though: a handful of lines drop the threshold to 18 on shorter sailings or particular routes, so the real answer depends on which line and itinerary you pick.

The standard 21 rule

The reason behind the policy is largely about alcohol. In the US, the drinking age is 21, and lines don’t want unsupervised under-21 guests in a setting with bars and casinos. To keep things simple, most lines require at least one guest per cabin to be 21 or older.

That means an 18-year-old usually can’t book a cabin solo, but can sail at 18 when an adult 21 or older shares the room.

Lines and itineraries that allow 18

Some exceptions exist, and they change over time, so always confirm with the line directly:

• Repositioning or longer voyages on certain lines sometimes set the minimum at 18.
• European or international sailings may follow the local drinking age of 18 rather than 21.
• A few lines have historically allowed 18-to-20 guests to book together under specific conditions.

Even when sailing is allowed at 18, expect the line to disable alcohol purchases on your account.

If you’re 18 and traveling with a parent or older sibling who’s 21+, you’re almost always fine. Sailing entirely on your own at 18 is possible but limited to specific lines and routes, so read the fine print first.
